Speeding past stereotypes: foodpanda and Women on Wheels partner to empower women in Pakistan

Posting date: 10 March 2021

WoW will provide free-of-cost bike riding training to Pakistani women in order to train them to become foodpanda riders.

Pakistan’s largest delivery platform, foodpanda, has partnered with Women on Wheels (WoW), an initiative by the Salman Sufi Foundation (SSF) for social empowerment of women, to create thousands of new employment opportunities for females.

Under the agreement, Women on Wheels by SSF will provide free motorbike ridingtraining to young women across Pakistan, with the goal of training these women to become future foodpanda riders.

The foundation will take care of the scheduling of the training sessions along with management and maintenance of the training with the help of WoW training staff, available on ground throughout all trainings.

How is the initiative empowering women?

By enhancing women’s mobility, the partnership aims to improve female freedom and inclusion in the Pakistani society, while also increasing their economic participation and access to education.

Speaking about the partnership, Salman Sufi, Founder SSF, said, “It has always been the aim of our flagship Women on Wheels project to enable and create an economic ecosystem where the women of Pakistan can be financially empowered to make their own decisions while working for the betterment of Pakistan. Our latest collaboration with foodpanda is a practical realisation towards that goal and we are confident that our WoW trained female riders will be an asset for the foodpanda community at large.”

Promoting financial independence in women

Commenting on the partnership, Nauman Sikander, CEO foodpanda said, “foodpanda is an equal opportunity employer. Our aim is to be at the forefront of supporting initiatives that can help empower women in Pakistan. With this partnership, we plan to enable financial independence in women through our platform and to have higher female representation in our fleet.”

With over 20,000 restaurant partners across the country and millions of food deliveries every month, foodpanda is Pakistan’s biggest e-commerce and food delivery company. foodpanda provides self-employment income opportunities to thousands of home chefs and delivery riders to earn a successful living as and when they choose to.
